Hair Restoration By Using Cosmetic Surgery

A full, healthy head of hair is considered a sign of youth and good health in both men and women. As a result, those who experience hair loss as a result of genetic tendencies or stress can suffer a great deal of embarrassment and discomfort as their hair thins dramatically. Hair replacement surgery can help boost appearance and self-confidence by transferring hair from one area the body to the areas which are experiencing hair loss. In most cases, hair restoration works by taking grafts and flaps of healthy hair growth from one area of the head to areas of the head were no hair grows.

In some cases, cosmetic surgeons use more than one technique in order to achieve a realistic looking head of hair. Patients who require dramatic change usually have scalp reduction or tissue expansion procedures performed. Those who need only a modest change may opt for punch grafts, mini-grafts, micro-grafts, slit grafts, or strip grafts. In all cases, hair restoration will not encourage new hair growth, but instead gives you more fullness. You will not get the full head of hair you had before hair loss, but your appearance will be dramatically improved because areas of your hair that have thinned will be camouflaged effectively.

As with any cosmetic procedure, there are risks involved. A small percentage of people who have this procedure experience side effects such as excessive bleeding, scars, infection, and pain. In cases where hair is transplanted, there is a small risk that the grafts won’t “take” which means that the surgery must be repeated. In cases where hair loss continues after the surgery has been performed, new patches of thinning out hair may occur, which may require additional surgery to correct.

Hair replacement surgery usually does not require a hospital stay. Usually, sedatives and local anesthesia are used. In some cases, several sessions may be needed to get the desired effect. In between each session, you may require several months of recovery time. In some cases, it may take up to two years to fully transplant the hair in a way that achieves the maximum level of fullness. Partly, the length and complexity of the hair transplant procedures will depend on the color and texture of your hair. If you have coarse and light-colored hair, you will be able to see better results than people with fine, dark colored hair and you will see results in a shorter period of time as well.

There are many Dallas plastic surgeons who perform this procedure. Dr. David M. Lavine is one such Dallas professional.
